Topic: Helping

In today’s class, Dr. Carlston moved away from straight bystander intervention types of issues and moved towards a more general discussion of helping. He started with a discussion of 6 key questions that will determine whether or not somebody helps somebody else. We learned that people ore more likely to help if they view somebody else helping (e.g., modeling changing flat tire). He then went through a number of sample studies to demonstrate a number of potential moderators of helping (e..g, sex of helper and target, race of helper and target, effects of mood and guilt).

Key terms:

You should be familiar with all the study examples given in class as well as the 6 key questions surrounding the likelihood somebody will help another.
