Buck Island

Despite the name, this year's Duck Conference will actually be held in a small gated community known as Buck Island, in the northern stretch of the Outer Banks between Duck and Corolla. You will drive through Duck on the way there. See the maps for further details.

Airport

By far the most convenient airport to the Outer Banks is Norfolk, VA.

There is no public transportation from ORF to the Outer Banks.  There are now some shuttle services that serve that route, and one could always hire a cab or an Uber.  But I believe all of these alternatives will cost you a small fortune.

Consequently,  you will undoubtedly want to rent a car or share a ride with someone who is doing so.  The best chances for ride sharing are Saturday afternoons between about 1 and 6 PM. Travel plans will be posted in advance., and you will probably want to make at least tentative arrangements for travel both to and from the conference site in advance.  If you plan on arriving late or leaving early, this will obviously make ride sharing more difficult.

Should I rent a car?

It can be nice to have a car, just to have some freedom in going to restaurants, shopping, or to any of the more distant attractions (virtually everything in the Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills areas, Cape Hatteras, Manteo, or even the village of Duck).  Parking is limited at the houses, but we are extremely close to a public parking area where cars can be left at no charge.   In general, it is probably best (and cheapest) for groups of people to share a rental (be sure then to list all the drivers with the rental company when you register).

Fortunately, Buck Island is very close to the Timbuktu shopping area, which includes a few decent restaurants, souvenir shopping, miniature golf, ice cream, groceries, liquor store, etc.  It is pleasant 10-15 minute walk (well, I suppose how pleasant it is depends on the weather and the company... but it can be very pleasant).  So people without cars will not be totally isolated from civilization.
