This
year's houses
(<~
Back to Travel)

Where to go when
you arrive:
This
year I can't give you much advance
information about our houses, because
two of them are new to us. I
can't even tell you with certainty
which house you should come to when
you arrive--this will depend on where
I end up staying and where we prepare
dinner the first night. I
suggest you come first to "Awake My
Soul," pictured and described below,
because it is straight ahead as you
drive to the end of Orion's Way, where
it connects with Voyager Street There
is lots of parking in a lot right
across the street. I will try to
leave a note on the door of Awake My
Soul directing you elsewhere to check
in if that is necessary.
Here
is what I know about the houses:
Our
Traditional Main House
Ten Broeck Dunes (BU89) used to be
called Four Fun, and it is one we've
been in, and loved, for years.
It has traditionally been our main
house, where talks and meals are held,
but it is possible that we will decide
that one of the other houses will
better suit these purposes this
year. Ten Broeck Dunes is all
the way down the left end of Voyager
Street, up a drive to the right at the
end of the road.

Ten
Broeck Dunes
To get
to Ten Broeck Dunes, continue on Highway
12 until you get to Timbuck II (a major
shopping area). Then turn
right into Buck Island. This is
the last right turn before you get to
the traffic light at Albacore. If
memory serves me correctly, there is a
"Brew Thru" and/or a gas station to the
left of the Buck Island driveway.
After turning right onto Orion's Way,
you will drive past a gazebo and
unmanned guard shack near the
entrance. (A code is often needed
to open the gate, and I will try to
obtain this in advance and send it to
everyone in an email. Otherwise,
call or text me). Continue
straight ahead as far as possible, then
turn left on Voyager, and at the end of
the road there is a driveway that goes
up and around to the right. That
is the drive for Ten Broeck Dunes, which
is behind the house on the street (and
thus, right on the beach).

The
Central House
Life's
a Beach
is a new house for us, an oceanfront
home just two houses down from Ten
Broeck Dunes on Voyaber
Street. The Street address
is 779 Voyager Road--but you aren't
likely to find that posted anywhere.
This
house is the most central of our
three, but as far as I can tell, it is
the only one of the three that doesn't
have an elevator. (This may be
relevant to those with bad knees or
lots of groceries to unload). To
get to Life's a Beach follow the
instructions for going to Ten Broeck
Dunes but look right to the beach side
of the road shortly before you get to
the end of Voyager Street.

Life's
A Beach

The
Big House
According
to the web, "Awake My Soul" boasts nine
master suites, so a lot of folks will be
assigned to stay here. The
amenities at this house appear to be
extensive, it is on the beach side of
the road, and it has an elevator.
But because there is a row of houses
even closer to the beach, this "second
tier" beachfront doesn't have quite as
good ocean views as the other two.
Awake
My Soul
"Awake My Soul" is more or
less at the intersection of Orion's Way
and Voyager Street, on the beach side of
the road just to the left of the public
walkway. So follow the
instructions above for Ten Broeck Dunes
but pull into the parking lot to the
right at the end of Orion's Way and walk
across the street to the house on the
left of the beach access walkway.

Finding
your room
Names
will be posted on the rooms by 5:00 P.M.
on the day of arrival. If you
arrive earlier than that on Saturday,
please wait outside the house until I
have had a chance to open up the houses
and get things set up. Once things
are set up, name tags will be taped on
or near the doors to the bedrooms.
Should you arrive late at night, house
assignment sheets will be posted inside
the glass front doors. Please go
to your house and try to settle in
without waking too many people.
Room assignments are based on personal
needs and requests, willingness to pay
extra for a primo room, seniority
(academic and within-conference),
bathroom locations, age and gender
balance, previous rooming assignments,
and such other considerations as I may
whimsically invent from time to
time. You may change rooms or
roommates provided that you have the
prior consent of everyone affected by
your move. Please also consult
with me if there is some problem with
your room or rooming situation.
